Ruth 1:1 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/sup>In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:2 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>The man\u2019s name was Elimelech, his wife\u2019s name Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:3 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 <\/sup>Then Elimelech, Naomi\u2019s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:4 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/sup>They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:5 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>And Mahlon and Chilion died also, both of them, so the woman was bereft of her two sons and her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/sup>Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the LORD had visited His people by giving them bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 <\/sup>Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, \u201cGo back, each of you, to your mother\u2019s home. May the LORD show kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>May the Lord grant you security in the home of a new husband.\u201d Then she kissed them, but they began weeping aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 <\/sup>They said to her, \u201cNo; we want to return with you to your people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:11 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/sup>But Naomi said, \u201cReturn home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/sup>Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me\u2013even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 <\/sup>would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the LORD\u2019s hand has gone out against me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:14 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/sup>At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:15 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/sup>\u201cLook,\u201d said Naomi, \u201cyour sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16 <\/sup>But Ruth replied, \u201cDon\u2019t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 <\/sup>Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18 <\/sup>When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:19 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

19 <\/sup>So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, \u201cCan this be Naomi?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:20 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

20 <\/sup>And she said to them, Call me not Naomi [pleasant]; call me Mara [bitter], for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:21 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

21 <\/sup>I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 1:22 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

22 <\/sup>So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Ruth Chapter 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:1 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/sup>Now Naomi had a kinsman of her husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:2 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, \u201cPlease let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after one in whose sight I may find favor.\u201d And she said to her, \u201cGo, my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:3 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 <\/sup>So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:4 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/sup>Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, \u201cThe LORD be with you!\u201d \u201cThe LORD bless you!\u201d they called back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:5 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, \u201cWhose young woman is that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:6 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/sup>The foreman replied, \u201cShe is the Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:7 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>She said, \u2018Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.\u2019 She went into the field and has worked steadily from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:8 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 <\/sup>Then Boaz said to Ruth, Listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but stay here close by my maidens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:9 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:10 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 <\/sup>Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground and said to him, \u201cWhy have I found favor in your sight that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:11 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/sup>Boaz replied to her, \u201cAll that you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband has been fully reported to me, and how you left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and came to a people that you did not previously know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:12 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/sup>May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:13 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 <\/sup>\u201cMay I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have given me comfort and have spoken kindly to your servant\u2013though I do not have the standing of one of your servant girls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:14 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/sup>At mealtime Boaz said to her, \u201cCome over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.\u201d When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:15 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/sup>And when she got up to glean, Boaz ordered his young men, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:16 (CJB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

16 <\/sup>In fact, pull some ears of grain out from the sheaves on purpose. Leave them for her to glean, and don\u2019t rebuke her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:17 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 <\/sup>So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:18 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

18 <\/sup>She took it<\/em> up and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. She also took it<\/em> out and gave Naomi what she had left after she was satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:20 (NKJV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

20 <\/sup>Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, \u201cBlessed be<\/em> he of the LORD, who has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead!\u201d And Naomi said to her, \u201cThis man is<\/em> a relation of ours, one of our close relatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:21 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

21 <\/sup>Then Ruth the Moabitess said, \u201cHe even said to me, \u2018Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:22 (CJB)-M<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

22 <\/sup>Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, \u201cIt\u2019s good, my daughter, for you to keep going out with his girls; so that you won\u2019t encounter hostility in some other field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 2:23 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

23 <\/sup>So she stayed close by the maids of Boaz in order to glean until the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest. And she lived with her mother-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Ruth Chapter 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:1 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/sup>One day Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, \u201cMy daughter, should I not try to find a home for you, where you will be well provided for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:2 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>\u201cNow is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maids you were? Behold, he winnows barley at the threshing floor tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:3 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 <\/sup>Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don\u2019t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:4 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/sup>When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:5 (CJB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>She responded, \u201cI will do everything you tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:6 (CJB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/sup>She went down to the threshing-floor and did everything as her mother-in-law had instructed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:7 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:8 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 <\/sup>In the middle of the night something startled the man, and he turned and discovered a woman lying at his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:9 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>He said, \u201cWho are you?\u201d And she answered, \u201cI am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:10 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 <\/sup>\u201cThe LORD bless you, my daughter,\u201d he replied. \u201cThis kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:11 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/sup>\u201cNow, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you whatever you ask, for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:12 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/sup>Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:13 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 <\/sup>Remain tonight, and in the morning if he will perform for you the part of a kinsman, good; let him do it. But if he will not do the part of a kinsman for you, then, as the Lord lives, I will do the part of a kinsman for you. Lie down until the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:14 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/sup>And she lay at his feet until the morning, but arose before one could recognize another; for he said, Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:15 (NLT2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/sup>Then Boaz said to her, \u201cBring your cloak and spread it out.\u201d He measured six scoops of barley into the cloak and placed it on her back. Then he returned to the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 3:16 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

16 <\/sup>When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, \u201cHow did it go, my daughter?\u201d Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 <\/sup>and added, \u201cHe gave me these six measures of barley, saying, \u2018Don\u2019t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18 <\/sup>Then Naomi said, \u201cWait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Ruth Chapter 4<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:1 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/sup>Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat there. When the kinsman-redeemer he had mentioned came along, Boaz said, \u201cCome over here, my friend, and sit down.\u201d So he went over and sat down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:2 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>He took ten men of the elders of the city and said, \u201cSit down here.\u201d So they sat down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:3 (AMP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 <\/sup>And he said to the kinsman, Naomi, who has returned from the country of Moab, has sold the parcel of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:4 (NLT2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/sup>I thought I should speak to you about it so that you can redeem it if you wish. If you want the land, then buy it here in the presence of these witnesses. But if you don\u2019t want it, let me know right away, because I am next in line to redeem it after you.\u201d The man replied, \u201cAll right, I\u2019ll redeem it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:5 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>Then Boaz said, \u201cOn the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:6 (NLT2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/sup>\u201cThen I can\u2019t redeem it,\u201d the family redeemer replied, \u201cbecause this might endanger my own estate. You redeem the land; I cannot do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:7 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>(Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:8 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 <\/sup>So the kinsman-redeemer said to Boaz, \u201cBuy it yourself.\u201d And he removed his sandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:9 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, \u201cToday you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilion and Mahlon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:10 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 <\/sup>I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon\u2019s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from the town records. Today you are witnesses!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:11 (NKJV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/sup>And all the people who were<\/em> at the gate, and the elders, said, \u201cWe are<\/em> witnesses. The LORD make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built the house of Israel; and may you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:12 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/sup>Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:13 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 <\/sup>So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:14 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/sup>The women said to Naomi: \u201cPraise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth 4:15 (CJB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/sup>May he restore your life and provide for your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16 <\/sup>Then Naomi took the child, laid him in her lap and cared for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 <\/sup>The women living there said, \u201cNaomi has a son.\u201d And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
