1 Samuel 1:1 (NASB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/sup>Now there was a certain man from Ramathaim-zophim from the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Samuel 1:2 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 <\/sup>Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/sup>When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he would give to Peninnah his wife and all her sons and daughters portions [of the sacrificial meat].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved Hannah, even though the Lord had kept her from having children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>Year after year it was the same\u2014Peninnah would taunt Hannah as they went to the Tabernacle. Each time, Hannah would be reduced to tears and would not even eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 <\/sup>Then Elkanah her husband said to her, \u201cHannah, why do you weep and why do you not eat and why is your heart sad? Am I not better to you than ten sons?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/sup>Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the LORD<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 <\/sup>or for their duties as priests. Whenever anyone offered a sacrifice, Eli\u2019s sons would send over a servant with a three-pronged fork. While the meat of the sacrificed animal was still boiling,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/sup>the servant would stick the fork into the pot and demand that whatever it brought up be given to Eli\u2019s sons. All the Israelites who came to worship at Shiloh were treated this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/sup>Sometimes the servant would come even before the animal\u2019s fat had been burned on the altar. He would demand raw meat before it had been boiled so that it could be used for roasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16 <\/sup>The man offering the sacrifice might reply, \u201cTake as much as you want, but the fat must be burned first.\u201d Then the servant would demand, \u201cNo, give it to me now, or I\u2019ll take it by force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 <\/sup>This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD\u2019s sight, for they were treating the LORD\u2019s offering with contempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18 <\/sup>Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD, as<\/em> a boy wearing a linen ephod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/sup>And the word of [the Lord through] Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines and encamped beside Ebenezer; the Philistines encamped at Aphek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>The Philistines drew up in battle array to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
